Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency on the drums, as well as a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than earlier recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. The group also had a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
