Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a stronger, more constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album was indicative of the maturation of group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a tour around the world to promote it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before.
