Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain the single track "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The band featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
