Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Bentley's custom coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed a unique key case to celebrate the brand's centenary. Made of Dark Stained Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying "B" paperweight, a set keys and a brochure featuring never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre imagery.

Aesthetics

Design

Function

The Bentley Mulsanne key features buttons that open the trunk and another which starts the car. It also has a switch to activate the parking break. The knob can be used to fold or unfold the mirrors if you are parking in a tight area. This feature makes it easier to get into and out of your car.

The key is made of vegetable tanned leather and takes two days to make each one. The key is cut by hand, then shaped, sewed after which it is sealed and polished to give a superior result. It is sturdy, compact, and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is similar to the Volkswagen Phaeton's huge car key, however it feels heavier and more premium.

Secure-A-Key is also available to help prevent keyless entry theft. This device is put inside the remote control key fob and will shut it off after a few minutes of inactivity. This stops thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices which can unlock and start the vehicle.

Personalisation

Bentley's bespoke division, Mulliner, allows customers to design their own car. The "mood station" allows guests to select images that inspire them. Bentley estimates that it takes 500 man-hours on average to construct and assemble a Mulsanne. The main reason for this lengthy effort is a deliberate refusal to embrace modern tech. Instead of using a machine to space the perfectly matched cross-stitched leather seats, workers at the Crewe factory do it by hand. Drivers must park their vehicles manually, rather than relying on sensors built-in to direct them to parallel and perpendicular spots.

At the event, Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization capabilities using a special example that was the Mulsanne W.O. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition pays homage to the founder William Osler Bentley. The 100 limited-edition cars include an exclusive key that shows an image of the 1930 8 Liter's crankshaft.
