Avon's cynical personality and disregard for humanity have made Avon a wildly popular character among his fans. Avon is also a remarkable entrepreneur with an unusual level of understanding of the human psyche. He is unique in the sense that the man he is both a hero and an antihero. One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was the way Heyer contrasted Leonie's raunchy ways with Avon's cool planning and reserved. His calm manner of speaking is starkly different from her violent physical reactions and blood-lust. I also loved how he defeated the villain without threat or chasing him. Instead he employed insinuation and storytelling.

Heyer subtlely highlighted the limitations of women in this period. Leonie dislikes trading in her breeches for layers of skirts and petticoats. she doesn't like riding side-saddle and is constantly shooting dead villains (even when it's a dangerous job). Avon is initially a little uncomfortable by her rebellious behavior however, he quickly comes to love her.

I did find it difficult to determine who was who in the beginning, because Heyer refers to the Duke using a variety of different names in the first couple of pages. Once you have it figured out, it becomes easier to read. The book was amazing and I would highly recommend it. You won't be let down regardless of whether you're a Georgette Heyer fan or love romance in general!

Avon's Relationship with Davenant

Avon is known for its beauty products, but also offers an opportunity to earn and is a leading advocate for women's financial independence. The company has been in existence for more than 130 years, and has always stood for innovation, optimism, and most importantly for women. Many of the ton believe it's just a new Avon fad, but they soon begin to notice the changes in his behavior. He treats Leonie more respectfully, uses less biting sarcasm, and Avon Book April even wears black clothes to match himself.

Avon is no longer able, thanks to his new character to keep Leonie's affair secret from the Duke. He has also begun to treat Rupert with a bit more care, as well. He doesn't attempt to make her jealous of his friendship with Leonie however, he does gently warn her to be more cautious with her relationships in the near future.
